Rethinking handwashing during food preparation

Man using SuperTowel on his hands

It’s an early morning in the Hitsats refugee camp in northern Ethiopia. A group of eight young Eritrean men are preparing to start the day. A few months ago these men didn’t know each other – now they share a shelter and two cramped beds. Their shelter is not what you might expect from a ‘bachelor pad’ in a refugee camp. Hygiene seems to be of utmost importance to these men and everything is neat and in its place. Despite being thrown together like this, the men seem to have developed their own role within this new ‘family unit’.

When each of the men woke up, they washed their hands, face and feet – some with just water, some with water and soap. Now, as […]

Interview with Rita Momoh

Two women hold a baby at an event

Consider this: the world is urbanizing at an unprecedented rate, with the migration of millions of individuals to cities and urban centres bringing enormous pressure to bear on inhabitants, politicians, city managers, urban planners and policymakers.[1] In a stark dichotomy, in Nigeria, access to piped water through household connections has decreased in urban areas, and the post-construction functionality of water points and schemes remains low.[2] It can be easy to dismiss the profound significance of water in socioeconomic development, yet the reality of it is clear: across Nigeria these issues have a huge impact on health, education, livelihoods and well-being.

Celebrating 10 years of GHD with a #high5forhandwashing

High-5 for handwashing

Every year, preventable diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia claim the lives of 1.4 million children under 5 around the world. These deaths can be significantly reduced if children, mothers, and caregivers alike are taught to embrace the simple, yet often neglected lifesaving act of handwashing with soap.

Lifebuoy is celebrating Global Handwashing Day (GHD) this year with a #high5forhandwashing. Through this campaign, we aim to gather as many high5s for handwashing as possible, teaching healthy handwashing habits to 5 children for every high5forhandwashing shared. We hope to continue raising awareness about the importance of this habit and keep working to encourage better hand hygiene for more people around the world.

A simple high5 transcends culture, geography, and language and our #high5forhandwashing campaign seeks to unite supporters, championing […]
