7 concerning links between poverty and a poor education

Education is the ticket to a better life, but for kids living in poverty that ticket can be as elusive as the multimillion dollar lottery ticket of which we have all dreamed.

One in five children live in poverty in the United States. Children from these lower income households are far less likely to pull themselves out. That’s not to say children from modest means don’t work hard and get ahead, but there’s little doubt they face a rockier road to success.

“A family’s income should not determine a child’s outcome, but too often that’s the case,” said Lisa Scullin, Vice President of Communications for the residential Milton Hershey School in Derry Township. “When you want a child to succeed, you have to look at his or her total environment.”
